What is Life's Essential 8?

Life's Essential 8 is the American Heart Association's framework for cardiovascular health. It organizes prevention into eight measurable domains: diet, physical activity, nicotine exposure, sleep health, body mass index, blood lipids, blood glucose, and blood pressure.

The point is not to turn health into a moral report card. The useful part is that it makes prevention visible. Instead of vaguely trying to "be healthier," you can see which parts are already strong and which parts are most worth improving first.

How the LE8 score is calculated

Each entered domain is scored from 0 to 100. A complete score is the average of all eight domain scores. In AHA framing, 80 to 100 is high cardiovascular health, 50 to 79 is moderate cardiovascular health, and below 50 is low cardiovascular health. This calculator follows the published adult LE8 threshold structure where direct inputs are available. For diet, it uses a 16-item MEPA-style questionnaire and converts the resulting 0-16 score into LE8 diet points.

For the source methodology, see the AHA paper: Life's Essential 8: Updating and Enhancing the American Heart Association's Construct of Cardiovascular Health.

Diabetes: A1c <7 = 40, 7-7.9 = 30, 8-8.9 = 20, 9-9.9 = 10, >=10 = 0. Fasting glucose is not used for the diabetes scoring path.
Blood pressureSystolic and diastolic pressure<120/<80 = 100; 120-129/<80 = 75; 130-139 or 80-89 = 50; 140-159 or 90-99 = 25; >=160 or >=100 = 0; subtract 20 if treated

What to do after you calculate it

The most useful score is the one that points to the next practical step. A low score in one domain does not mean everything is broken. It means that domain may be a good place to start.

Why Vital8 goes beyond LE8

Life's Essential 8 is the foundation. Vital8 takes a slightly different route because prevention often needs more context: fitness beyond minutes of exercise, cholesterol particles beyond a single LDL number, inherited risk from Lp(a), and inflammatory signals such as hsCRP.

That does not mean those extra layers belong inside the official LE8 score. They do not. The clean LE8 score stays clean here; the broader Vital8 work is a separate educational layer for readers who want to think more deeply about risk.
